Rumor Mill - H.S. Pool is Not Closed
It has been brought to our attention that erroneous reports have surfaced stating that the high school pool has been officially closed due to the budget deficit.
Please note the correct information on this matter:
Mr. Danosky very clearly stated that the pool is closed for the season. That means temporarily from now until it is needed again for competition during the school year. P.A.C. suggested closing it earlier in the year at our board meeting to help save energy and reduce expenses. It is still on the "hit list" as the budget is being evaluated, but the operating costs have now been reduced to $90,000 from $150,000.
P.A.C. is attempting to secure grant money to permanently keep the pool open and the school board has given P.A.C. time to investigate additional funding options.
As we get further information, it will posted here. Thank you!

Update on Meeting With Mr. Danosky - Re:High School Pool
As you know, one of the many potential budget cuts that our school faces next fiscal year is the closure of the high school pool.
Since it was noted in the board of education budget line items a few months ago, Lisa Lambert has taken the lead for PAC in terms of information distribution and communication. She has been in touch with Mr. Danosky on several occasions and, along with our coaches, has conducted research on our behalf concerning the estimated expense of the pool operation.
In response to Lisa’s passionate persistence, Mr. Danosky was kind enough to spend about two hours with the PAC Board of Directors on Tuesday evening. He provided an insightful background of the situation and shared the entire budget process with us – including the estimated cost savings if the high school pool was closed.
Following Mr. Danosky’s presentation, a very healthy discussion continued with our board members. Without getting into all the budget line items and small details, here is a brief recap:
What we know:
- That swimming is not being singled out by the board of education. The operation of the pool is just another line item that can help decrease our budget shortfall.
- Mr. Danosky and the board of education are very open to suggestions regarding the closing of the pool. If the expenses can be significantly reduced, they are open to not closing it.
- Firm numbers have not been established on the operational expense, they are working on estimates from previous years.
- If the pool closes, the high school swim teams will have a priority on swim times at the Pathfinder pool.
What we don’t know:
- Our school operational budget for the next fiscal year – as it could change when the state sets the dollar amount per pupil.
- If we can reduce expenses to an amount that would keep the pool open.
- The exact operational expenses related to the pool in terms of heating and energy usage.
During our discussion, Mr. Danosky asked us for suggestions. There were several, but two stood out that could create a noteworthy impact. One was a suggestion that a pool cover that could save energy when the pool was not in use. Another was to keep the pool “dormant” – not closed – immediately after the swim teams finish the season. These are a few suggestions that could save some significant dollars.
One other suggestion was to hire a pool engineer/consultant to get an accurate measurement of the exact energy expenses of the pool. Our coaches are contacting a consultant who is very familiar with this type of project. If the price is fair, Mr. Danosky has agreed to hire a consultant to insure accuracy of the budget numbers presented.
Also in attendance was Tedd Bradley, the Director of the Community Education program. If the pool were to close, he indicated that his organization would do their best to schedule swim times and accommodate all the pool users to the best of his ability.
As you know, we have very limited control of the situation. One thing we can control is our interest and passion in the PAC program. We pledge to keep you updated on any information that we receive and we will post it here.
We also ask for any suggestions that you may have. You can post them here or contact any of the PAC board members or coaches.
Thanks again for your participation in our program!

Our past two swim-a-thons were great successes and our swimmers really enjoy participating. It is a an excellent opportunity for the team to bond and it builds team spirit.
Pledge forms - with additional details on the event - will be given to each swimmer at the pool this week. If your swimmer does not bring one home, please look for one of the parent volunteers or coaches at the pool. They will have a form for you.
A few important details:

Sign the Petition
As many of you may have heard, one of the proposed cuts for our school-wide budget crisis is to close the high school pool. Not only would this affect our swim club, but it will also affect every swim related function in the district – including open swims, lessons, etc. In an effort to show that we have a growing contingent of pool users who care about the swim programs on all levels, we have generated a petition to present at the Board of Education meeting this Thursday evening. We are hoping to raise the awareness of those directly involved in the budgeting process that swimming in the Pinckney area is a life skill and an activity that is important to a majority of residents, students and their families.
The petition will be posted on the bulletin board at the pool this week. Please help show your support by signing it prior to Thursday evening.
Everyone is also encouraged to attend the Board of Education meeting. It will be held at the Pathfinder School Media Center at 7:00 pm on January 17th.

Happy New Year! Welcome to the Winter 2008 Session of PAC
Happy New Year! We hope your holidays were spectacular. Monday and Tuesday, January 7th and 8th, are the first two days of our winter season. The mandatory Parent Meeting will be held each of these nights. Each family must come in to re-register their swimmer(s). If you have already registered with Community Ed, you will only have to fill out a health form and pick up the new information for meet dates and parent commitments. If you still need to register, there will be parents on hand to take your fees by credit card, check or cash.
With swimming being a year round sport, sometimes there is confusion about registration. At the beginning of each session you must register your swimmer(s). At all times, we need accurate information for emergency contacts, allergies, medical issues and insurance. We also need to know who is coming and when they are supposed to be there. Parents need information about the meet dates and times, as well as where the meets are going to be held. We are a parent supported club! We need each family to help in some way! Please sign up for your volunteer choices! If you cannot attend either meeting, you MUST contact Mary Thorns, our team manager. If a swimmer is not properly registered, they cannot swim after Tuesday, January 8th, until we have the information necessary to provide a safe and fair competitive swimming experience.
Hope you didn't eat to many cookies and chocolate over the holidays!
As always, SWIM FAST!
